The History Of Toledo Industry

It never hurts to know a bit about the history of the town you live in or are considering moving to. When it comes to the city of Toledo, Ohio, there might be something about it that you never knew. This section of our site will be dealing with the history of the types of industry that have made Toledo what it is today. So, how about you stopping looking up Smith Loveless energy-efficient wastewater treatment and pumping systems and join us as we guide you along a trip down memory road.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, railroads started emerging as a major form of transportation in Ohio. Because of this, Toledo became a key target destination for many railways. As transportation became easier, a variety of industries began to start up in Toledo because it was now easier to bring in goods and materials. Breweries, carriage makers, furniture companies and glass companies, just to name a few, all sprung up in the city of Toledo, Ohio.

Eventually, Toledo would be given the nickname, "City of Glass," and would live up to that moniker over time. Toledo became an innovator in the glass industry. Didn't matter what type of glass product. Be it windshields, keels, construction materials, windows or bottles. Needed something made of glass, Toledo, Ohio would be the place to go. Glass was and still is a major part of Toledo's industry.

Many automobile related companies would make their way to Toledo, Ohio over the years. These automobile companies such as Champion Spark Plug and Chrysler Jeep set up shop in the city. Manufacturing Jeep vehicles and selling auto parts added another layer to the Toledo industry. Jeeps are still being manufactured in the city of Toledo to this day. There have probably been a bond tester or two used in that plant during the years.

The city of Toledo has recently seen the town become a leader in green jobs. Mainly due to the rise of solar energy economic development. The future of Toledo looks very bright and very green with this new industry. Being a hub for solar energy research has led companies such as Xunlight to open plants in the area. While companies such as Xunlight aren't being heralded as being leaders in strapping solutions for the metal industry, they are ahead of the pack when it comes to silicon-based alloys and are seen as the leaders in solar cell manufacturing. Toledo is positing itself to be at the top of a very interesting industry. Much more interesting than being known as the leading xray protection manufacturer, don't you think?
