Must Sees in Toledo

Whether your job is to push papers from one end of a desk to another or install wall mounted boilers, chances are your employers are going to give you a day off every once in a while. When those days come around you have two options. 1: you can sit around your apartment all day watching television and eating potato chips, or 2: you can grab some friends/co-workers/relatives and go out into the world to seek out some fun. While there's nothing wrong with going for 1 every once in a while, this article assumes you don't want to be a complete loner and will therefore be choosing option 2 most of the time. To help you locate your personal concept of fun in Toledo, we've come up with these suggestions.

Music and Theater

While Toledo has been traditionally known as an industrial powerhouse, there's more to the city than just churning out heaps of car parts and reusable plastic containers. The city also has a thriving arts scene that for once isn't totally centered around the downtown district. The biggest theater, the one you would go to to attend a major rock concert or traveling Broadway show, is the Stranahan Theater on the south side. To see a play or musical you can try the Toledo Repertory Theater or the Colllingwood Arts Center. Ballet is both studied and performed at the Ballet Theater of Toledo.

Art

Toledo offers residents and visitors a chance to visit not just traditional works of art but also new and unique ones. The Toledo Museum of Art is a work of art in itself, housed in a beautiful Greek Revival building. It contains older paintings and sculptures as well as a variety of glass art produced in and around Toledo. Glass blowing is one of the things the city is known for, and you can buy pieces in many shops throughout the city. If you're looking for a birthday gift idea for a woman glass art could be an excellent choice.

Sites of Interest

Toledo's glassmaking prowess is shown off in the Veteran's Glass City Skyway bridge over the Maumee River and the headquarters building of the Owens-Illinois Glass Company. Kids will enjoy the Toledo Zoo and its hippoquarium, as well as the Toledo Science Center. Food publicity comes in a unique form at Tony Packo's Cafe, which features hundreds of hit dog buns signed by celebrities. Nature buffs will love the R.A. Stranahan Arboretum and the Toledo Botanical Garden.

Sports

Toldeo has no major league sports teams, but that doesn't stop the city from offering you the opportunity to play or watch over a dozen sports. The hot dogs and peanuts you get at games are an example of sports catering. Toronto, Ontario has the NHL Maple Leafs, Toledo has the Walleyes of the ECHL. The Mud Hens play minor league baseball, the Bullfrogs play arena football, and the University of Toledo Rockets play a number of NCAA sports including basketball. You can also golf at the Inverness Club or watch car and harness races at the Toledo Speedway.
