Demographics

So you're moving to Toledo from Ontario and you're (understandably) a little concerned about how your new city is going to stack up against Toronto. Hockey tournaments are your favorite thing in the world. Will there be any in Toledo? How many people are there your age? Maybe, if there are enough of you, you can form your own hockey league. While our entertainment page can answer your questions about hockey tournaments, for an overview of what sort of people you might meet in Toledo you'll want to keep reading this page instead. We've harvested the U.S. Census Bureau's statistics to give you an accurate picture.

The current estimated population of Toledo, Ohio is around 317,000, which is up by about 3,000 from the year 2000, when the last census was conducted. However, the figures will still be reasonably accurate, as the percent change is only about 1%. These 314,000 people lived in 129,000 households. That's more than enough people to buy up every wedding rental, Brantford rental car, and hotel room if they were all invited to your wedding. These 314,000 people were spread over an area of about 80 square miles, giving the city a population density of 3637 people per square mile, which is near the national average. The number of housing units actually numbered 139,871, more than the number of households, so you know there's room in the city for you.

If you're a member of an ethnic minority and you're hoping to find a community of people who speak your language that you can buy aquarium fish foods from, the following might be useful. In Toledo, 70% of surveyed people were white, while 23.5% were African American. About 5.5% of people came from a Hispanic background while Asians came in at nearly 1.5%. Native Americans made up .3% of the population. The most common ancestral backgrounds were German, Irish, Polish, English, and French, though the vast majority of people in the city speak English at home.

If you're hoping to find someone your own age to date, who likes drivers of septic tank pump trucks you might be interested in this next group of statistics. Out of the households surveyed, about 38% were married couples and 30% had children. 26% of the population was under 18 while 18 to 24 year olds made up a further 11%. 25 to 44 year olds represent about 30% of Toledo's population while people 45-64 represent 20%. Approximately 13% of Toledo's citizens were seniors. There is a slight gender imbalance in the city, as there are only 87 males for every 100 females.

If you're a high-roller, you won't have much company (or competition) at the top in Toledo. Less than 1% of Toledo's residents make more than $150,000 per year. The largest income brackets were $50,000 to $75,000 and $30,000 to $50,000. The average income per household was about $32,000. Nearly 18% of the population was below the poverty line.
